Economist and 2006 Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus is scheduled to speak at Agnes Scott College Wednesday night.
The author, banker and economics professor from Bangladesh is expected to discuss his new book, “Building Social Business.” The event, which is open to the public, is scheduled to take place at 8:15 p.m. in Presser Hall. There is no admission fee.
Yunus is responsible for creating the concepts of microcredit and microfinance. These concepts are based on his belief that poor entrepreneurs can succeed if given access to very small loans with affordable interest rates that traditional banks do not provide cash till payday.
Yunus put these concepts into practice at his own Graneen Bank, for which he and the lending institution he created were awarded the Nobel Prize in 2006. In 2009, Yunus received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Obama.
